Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z1 though seems very similar but in terms of specifications and features Sony has tweaked many new features in Xperia Z2. Xperia Z2 supports S801 SoC, Adreno 330 GPU, 3 GB RAM, dual Stereo Speakers, better notification light, larger 5.2″ FHD display with Live Color LED tech and new camera app with features like 4K Video recording and TimeShift video app with slow motion feature.

While Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z1 features same 20.7 MP rear cam Sony “G” lens 1/2.3-inch sensor, it seems Sony has worked more on Xperia Z2 camera algorithm this time. Xperia Z1 users from starting are still complaining about too much noise in the pics and it seems Sony is now working on that domain seriously.

XDA Dev RyokoN has ported Xperia Z2 Smart call handling feature on Xperia Z1 and it works fine. Your Xperia Z1 needs to have root in order to install this port.

Xperia Z2 Smart call handling features lets users answer the calls without touching the screen, to answer the calls bring the phone near to ear, to reject the calls just shake the device and silent the phone by just placing it face-down. Xperia Z1 14.2.A.1.142 firmware rolled on Deutsche Telekom carrier

Recently 14.2.A.1.142 firmware was certified for Xperia Z1 C6903, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact on PTCRB from which 14.2.A.1.142 firmware rolled first on Xperia Z1 Compact ( carrier devices ) and then 14.2.A.1.146 firmware was spotted on Chinese Xperia Z1 Compact M51w which is yet not available for sale. Now 14.2.A.1.142 firmware is seen rolling on some carrier specific Xperia Z1 also. 14.2.A.1.144 firmware has already been certified for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra.

14.2.A.1.142 firmware ( Android 4.3 ) is confirmed on Xperia Z1 Deutsche Telekom carrier handset in Germany which is a minor bug fixing update only and was spotted for Xperia Z1 C6903. Some users are still experiencing touch screen unresponsive and sound enhancement force close issue still on this update.

We don’t expect this Xperia Z1 14.2.A.1.142 firmware to roll out globally on regular variants.

As when 14.2.A.1.142 firmware was certified for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact, we mentioned that 14.2.A.1.144 firmware will be soon certified and it seems a carrier specific firmware and here it comes, just now 14.2.A.1.144 firmware has been certified for Xperia Z1 C6903 and Xperia Z1 Compact D5503 on PTCRB, nothing spotted for Xperia Z Ultra yet.

Yesterday we saw 14.2.A.1.146 firmware hitting Chinese Xperia Z1 Compact M51w and a day before that 14.2.A.1.142 firmware hit Xperia Z1 Compact D5503 but no update spotted for Xperia Z1 and Xperia z Ultra yet. Though it seems again a carrier specific update but you never know it comes 😉

How to enable pen mode on Xperia Z1 – Pen,Pencil working as Stylus

Xperia Z Ultra supports sensitive pen mode which enables user to write with pen or pencil and use them as stylus, well this feature is superb if you have tried but somehow Xperia Z1 didn’t see any such feature enabled. XDA user RyokoN confirms this pen mode feature can now be enabled on Xperia Z1 also and somehow was disabled by Sony on Xperia Z1.

Original mod comes from AOKP, which RyokoN implied on Xperia Z1 and it works as stated by many users. To enable pen mode on Xperia Z1, your handset must be rooted, well lets see how to use this feature.

[ UPDATE ] Below mentioned Pen Mode also works on Xperia SP. Do apply screen protector before writing with pen. Try at your own risk on Xperia SP.

Download the below mentioned pen mode enabling and disabling toggle app.

Turn the app on to use pen mode on Xperia Z1 and toggle it off when not using it as the app increases the touch sensitivity of screen so you might not feel comfortable keeping it on all time.

How to enable FM Radio without headset in Xperia smartphones

To enable FR radio in a smartphone you need to plugin the earphones in your device as they work as antenna for receiving signals. It is kind of odd thing but a necessity to make FM radio work. XDA developer DaRk-L0rD has come up with a mod which allows you to enable FM Radio without headset in Xperia smartphones. Your handset must be rooted for this mod to work on.

A full tutorial is given by the developer on how to enable FM Radio without headset in Xperia smartphone so you can easily do it by yourself but if you are a noob and don’t know about compiling and decompiling stuffs then you can directly install the modded Radio3.apk file to enable FM Radio without headset.

Enable FM Radio without headset – Working tutorial

You need to have the original FM Radio apk of your Xperia Smartphone. If you don’t have it, we have attched at last the FM Radio apk from our Xperia Z1.

#1 Follow below tutorial if you have knowledge of Compiling and Decompliling android apks, If not follow step #2.

Take out your FM Radio apk file.
Decompiling the above apk file. To decompile an apk, use this Decompiler tool. Download the source.zip file and extract it in a folder.
You fill see following files in the folder.

Navigate to folder smali > com > sonyericsson > fmradio > service.

Open the “PhfHandler.smali” file with Notepad.

Find “.if-eqz v0, :cond_0” code inside “PhfHandler.smali” file.

It will be like :-

Now compile this Modded Radio3.apk file. If you don’t how to do that, check this thread for more info.
Move this Modded Radio3.apk file to system/app. Set correct permissions rw-r-r. Do back up your current Radio3.apk file before replacing modded one.
Reboot, done 🙂

Xperia Album App 5.4.A.0.20 update rolling – Android KitKat Support

Sony has just rolled Album App 5.4.A.0.20 update following the previous Album App 5.4.A.0.12 version rolled in early Feb. Album App 5.4.A.0.20 update spotted as OTA update on Xperia Z family members and Xperia L, Xperia SP also following the same changelog as like its previous version.

Album App 5.4.A.0.20 update says Android 4.4 KitKat support again in changelog, which may indicate that Sony is updating its media apps before they roll out the official android 4.4 KitKat firmware update on their handsets. If you look closely in the screenshots you will see white icons in the status bar which is a native KitKat feature.

At present Sony Mobile is in middle of crisis regarding continuous delay in android 4.3 update for Sony Xperia SP, T, TX and V as promised by them and in middle of that regular updates are being rolled for Xperia Z family members. Recently we saw 14.2.A.1.136 firmware getting rolled for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and same is expected to hit Xperia Z1 Compact very soon. 10.4.1.B.0.101 firmware was rolled on Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z.

Just now a new 14.2.A.1.142 firmware is certified for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact on PTCRB for all the variants. 14.2.A.1.142 firmware has very less chances of getting rolled as we heard Sony is now currently working on 14.3.A.X.XXX firmware which will bring Android 4.4.X KitKat update on Xpera Z1, Z Ultra, Z1 Compact.

Xperia Z1, Z Ultra, Z Ultra GPE CyanogenMod 11 Nightly Available

A good news for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition users, just now CyanogenMod has confirmed that CyanogenMod 11 Nightly version ROM is available now for the mentioned devices. CyanogenMod 11 is based on android 4.4.2 version. Sony has already planned android 4.4 update for Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra but it may not be coming till March and Xperia Z Ultra GPE is already on android 4.4.2 KOT49H version and updates are maintained by Google.

At present CyanogenMod 11 Nightly is available for Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra and for Z Ultra GPE it is in testing now. You need to unlock bootloader of respective devices for installing ROM. Check below links if you interested in installing them and like to taste android 4.4 KitKat flavor on your device before Sony’s official updates.

A moment ago Sony updated Album App to version 5.4.A.0.12 which showed in changelog that it supports Android 4.4 KitKat and just now many users in India on their Xperia Z1 are getting Info Eye version 1.3.04 update notification. Info Eye version 1.3.04 notification till now seen Xperia Z1 C6902 India, C6903 Poland also.

Hope it also comes to Sony Smart Camera app present in Xperia Z, ZL, ZR, and Z Ultra. Previous Info eye app version was 1.2.04. Info Eye version 1.3.04 is a 21.9 MB update in size.

Sony updates Album App to version 5.4.A.0.12 – Android KitKat Support

Sony Mobile has just updated one of their media app, Album app is updated to new version 5.4.A.0.12 from previous 5.3.A.0.24 version. This new update moves album app from version 5.3.A to 5.4.A which means considerable changes in the app. At present Album app version 5.4.A.0.12 is confirmed rolling on Xperia Z series and Xperia L across many nations.

Album app version 5.4.A.0.12 brings android 4.4 KitKat Support as mentioned in the changelog which is very amusing right now, why would Sony mention android 4.4 KitKat stuff in the changelog of media app update. Well if you see clearly in screenshots below in one the screenshot taken by Sony itself, all icons in status bar are white in color which is a standard KitKat feature of Android.

[ REVIEW ] Xperia Z1 Leather Flip Case from Noreve

As usual it came in black and red box combination which looks very neat for a retail box of a phone’s case. Let’s have a look at it. Case is present inside a red pouch.

Now let’s have a look at naked Xperia Z1 Leather Flip Case from Noreve. In the above pic you can see on front is has Noreve’s brand logo on bottom right corner.

At back Noreve- Saint Tropez is written in silver color and stitched in black thread.

Let’s put Xperia Z1 inside the case. Case fits perfectly. Notice the front flap’s inner lining there is Noreve embossed everywhere, surface lining is smooth so that no harm to screen is made. All bumper clips are at perfect place so that phone fits firmly inside case.

Non-magnetic closure is included in the case.

Perfect space for speaker grills in the case.

Notebook style of case. You can’t access any ports while case in on along left profile of case i.e. you can’t use magnetic charging dock DK31 or EC21 charging cable while this case is on.

Opening for 3.5mm headphone jack in the case. Do note that there is no opening for hearing speaker on front flap which means if you use the phone for call while case on then hearing sound will be very low as what we faced.

While case in on, you may still be able to access the power button, volume rocker keys, SIM card slot and external camera key on right profile of Xperia Z1.

Perfect camera opening in the case without any obstruction for LED flash light. An opening for secondary microphone is also provided at top.

Noreve logo is embossed in whole inner lining of front flap.

Pros

Hand made leather used.
Can be used as a back stand.

Cons

Absence of hearing speaker slot in front flap.
Some users may find it a bit expensive but it’s a quality product you must admit.

Linda Lissola is creative design lead for Xperia Z1 Compact, she is from Sweden, currently living in Tokyo, Japan. She joined Sony Ericsson as a consultant initially and till now she has worked on many mid range and flagship smartphones.

Her views on design philosophy behind Xperia Z1 Compact

As per Linda Lissola, Xperia Z1 Compact inherited many features from Xperia Z1, the “Omni-Balance” design especially. She quotes….

OmniBalance represents equality; evocation of a certain appreciation of beauty, with a flow from all directions.

There’s a distinct difference between the two products though – Xperia Z1 is built for performance, but Xperia Z1 Compact (without compromising on any of that prowess) represents “expression” above all else.

Colors are often defined by association… or association is defined by color – but why should that be the case? We wanted to do something different; be broader with the colour range. Pink and Lime are fun, fresh additions but they’re bold with attitude. For us, they are completely gender / usage / mood / personality agnostic.

Biggest Challenge in Making Xperia Z1 Compact

To make a pocket friendly device with specs no less than a flagship device and even better performance, she quotes…

We overcame this by daring to be different with the new colors, and introducing the smaller form factor without compromising on any of the features that make Xperia Z1 so recognizably Sony.

The reason? These guys were / are so open and different; willing to blend different (industrial and art) design disciplines to create something unique.

She quoted three tips…

Never stop, or let anything hinder your curiosity throughout life.

Try and accrue as much experience as early on as possible, whether that be with an internship or work placement. This way you’ll get a real feel for what you want to do, and what you don’t – you have to be passionate about something to truly enjoy, and excel at it.

And finally, it’s a cliche, but teamwork is so important in design. It’s important, productive, rewarding (and fun!) to be diplomatic, work together and share inspiration.

No doubt Xperia Z1 Compact is a class phone, except for a few flaws like low speaker sound ( for some ) and embedded battery, it has unmatched performance. It has drawn very positive reviews from users who are using it now and from various tech websites who have already reviewed it.

While charging our Xperia Z1 from 0-65% , case got discharged completely.

You may feel that case has some unpleasant look and a bit bulky but as the battery plate is embedded inside the case so it has got some width and weight.

Sony D6503 Sirius camera photo samples leaked, compared with Xperia Z1

Sony D6503 aka Sony Sirius which has been unofficially announced as the real pics of Sony D6503 have been leaked weeks ago with an overview of what Sony has planned for users on Xperia Android 4.4.2 KitKat 4.4.2 UI. A much before that we saw Sony D6503 allegedly appearing in the AnTuTu Benchmark database and scoring 29745 points. Sony D6603 has also been spotted but with no images till now.

As you know Sony D6503 Sirius features same 20.7 MP rear cam with Sony “G” lens exactly like Xperia Z1, users were asking for the camera photo samples of it to check whether it’s camera quality is better than Xperia Z1 or not. Let us tell you clearly that Sony D6503 features same cam as Xperia Z1, only the firmware featured is different that’s why you may find a great difference in the camera photo samples of both.

Camera Mode :- Below pic is taken in a room with no light ( dark room ) “superior auto mode” with flash on.

P.S. We will soon be uploading the original camera resolution pics from Sony D6503 with the exif data.

As both Sony D6503 and Xperia Z1 shares same piece of hardware in rear camera, it seems except the firmware nothing is different in them. As when the firmware will be ready in final retail version on Sony D6503 we may find more better pics from it and same is expected from Xperia Z1 on android 4.4.2 KitKat 14.3.A.X.XXX firmware which Sony has already started testing.

Xperia Z1 vibration motor squeaking sound issue arising for many users

Many users are reporting to us about this weird Xperia Z1 vibration motor squeaking sound issue. For some a sound like bee buzzing comes when their phone vibrates and for some a loud squeaking sound comes. It is still not clear whether this vibration issue in Xperia Z1 is related with firmware or faulty hardware but we too have felt it on old .257 firmware.

Sony’s own forum is filled with many threads about this loud vibration sound issue on Xperia Z1. If you try Xperia diagnostic app on your phone then you can clearly identify the issue, want to clearly know what this issue is actually, just look at the video posted below by a user.

Check the squeaking sound coming when Xperia Z1 is vibrating. It can be a faulty hardware issue.

Xperia Z1 vs Sony D6503 aka Sony Sirius Comparison

Xperia Z1 and Sony D6503 features same design, with some changes in the ports location and speakers.

Xperia Z1 has one speaker at the bottom side while Sony D6503 has dual speakers one at the top near notification light and one the bottom side where Xperia Z1 has in form of pin holes.

Bigger Dimensions

Sony D6503 is bit larger in dimensions when compared to Xperia Z1 and has bigger screen also. Xperia Z1 features 5″ 1080p display while Sony D6503 features 5.2″ 1080p display.
