Android Wear is compatible with Android 4.3+ running device so your primary device need not be on Android 5.0 for connecting your SmartWatch 3.

Under system update settings check whether new Android 5.0.1 Lollipop ( OTA ) update  is available for your SmartWatch 3 or not, if yes then proceed as per on screen instructions. It is confirmed in regions like Australia, Sweden, France, Chile etc.
