Sony about to release bootloaders allowing booting from the recovery partition

A good news has come for developers working on building custom ROMs and recoveries for Sony Xperia devices, it is expected that Sony Mobile is about to release bootloaders allowing booting from the recovery partition. Earlier there was an issue with the Xperia devices that could not be booted from recovery.

As reported by FXP team, Sony Xperia devices with cortex-A7 processors viz. Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia T3, Xperia E3 and Xperia M2 are the first ones to receive these bootloaders from Sony, more devices to follow up soon as officially Sony has not released a statement on it yet.

How this works?

The bootloaders are live now and can be installed on above mentioned Xperia devices.

Note: This is for bootloader unlocked devices only!

Download Sony’s official FlashTool. Install it. Run it.

Switch off your device, hold volume down key and plug in USB cable into your PC. Green LED will display and your device will be recognized by FlashTool and bootloader upgrade with “Open Devices” name will be available

Once the new bootloader is installed on your device, you are good to go.

It is really a good news for developers working on Xperia devices.

Root Xperia T2 Ultra Dual and Install CWM Recovery 6.0.4.6 on 19.0.D.0.253 firmware

Sony has officially launched Xperia T2 Ultra Dual in many regions and the first 19.0.D.0.253 firmware update has also hit it a few days back. Being a new device development for Xperia T2 Ultra Dual has just been started and before getting launch at global level, Xperia T2 Ultra has been rooted on the latest 19.0.D.0.253 firmware and ClockworkMod recovery ( CWM based ) has been installed on the handset exclusively.

XDA dev DooMLoRD has successfully achieved root on Xperia T2 Ultra Dual and managed to install CWM based recovery on an unlocked bootloader handset. To begin with the process make sure you have unlocked the bootloader on your Xperia T2 Ultra Dual, to unlock bootloader check the official steps from Sony here. Keep in mind unlocking bootloader of your device will void your warranty. Backup your TA partition before unlocking bootloader else you will loose DRM keys; CAMERA working after unlocking bootloader.

Below mentioned is guide only for Xperia T2 Ultra Dual D53XX variants. ( May or may not work on Xperia T2 Ultra Single SIM )

Requirements 

  • Unlock bootloader on Xperia T2 Ultra Dual.

Xperia X10 AOSP Kitkat 4.4.2 Evervolv Es209ra ROM available now

Xperia X10, legendary Sony Ericsson device which seems forgotten by the developers and discontinued by the manufacturer has come back with a bang, guess what AOSP Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM is now available for it. Xperia X10 features 384 MB total RAM in system which disregards the essential requirement of running KitKat 4.4.2 version, as it needs atleast 512 MB RAM for perfect installtion.

XDA user Tof37  has come up with the first of its kind Xperia X10 AOSP Kitkat 4.4.2 ROM which has successfully booted on many users handset, though it is still pre-alpha 1 stage so it has a lot many bugs and some essential features are obviously not working.

You need to unlock the bootloader on Xperia X10 before trying the ROM and if you don’t know about installing customs ROMs much then stay away from it for the time being.

  • GSM and Data is working at some level.

CyanogenMod 11 based on android 4.4.2 KitKat was already released for Xperia Z1, Z Ultra and Z Ultra Google Play Edition a lot ago and now CyanogenMod 11 has hit Xperia Z1 Compact. Sony has already mentioned that they will be rolling android 4.4.2 KitKat for Xperia Z family and soon Xperia Z1 Compact will be getting it but if you are tired of waiting already and want to enjoy the stock android experience on your Xperia Z1 Compact here is your solution; CyanogenMod 11 Nightlies.

Xperia Z1 Compact CyanogenMod 11 Nightlies are available for download and you can test it on your device. As this is very early phase of CyanogenMod 11 ROM so experiencing bugs and other issues is natural. You need to unlock bootloader on your Xperia Z1 Compact before installing this.

Just now Xperia Z2 D6503 17.1.A.1.2 firmware ftf has been leaked which is the most recent build for Xperia Z2 till yesterday when we saw new 17.1.A.2.36 firmware getting certified on PTCRB. Leaked Xperia Z2 17.1.A.1.2 firmware is of ‘Commercial and Journalist’ Version not the retail 17.1.A.1.2 firmware ftf which will be available to regular Xperia Z2 users after the phone is officially launched in market.

Now days we are seeing too many cross device development regarding Sony Xperia smartphones where almost all Xperia Z2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat apps and features are ported to other Xperia devices. FreeXperia brings Xperia M CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4.2 FXP309 build

Sony recently certified 15.4.A.0.21 firmware for Xperia M which is speculated as Android 4.3 update but the chances of getting official Sony Android 4.4.2 KitKat update on Xperia M is very less and in the meantime FreeXperia Team has decided to support Xperia M CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4.2 development and first FXP309 build has come up now.

Xperia M  CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4.2 FXP309 build is now available for download and Xperia M users can test it if they want to taste the android 4.4.2 KitKat flavor on their device. You need to unlock the bootloader to install CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4.2 FXP309 build on Xperia M. Unlocking bootloader voids the warranty.

XDA dev Levered has made this Xperia Z2 Phone Answering Machine port and it is working fine on Xperia SP, though will work on other rooted Xperia Smartphones also. Let’s see how you can install this port. It works only for devices featuring android 4.3 or above.

Process of porting apps from Xperia Z2 has already begun and it started with Xperia Z2 Smart call handling feature getting ported for Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact. A moment ago we saw Xperia Z2 Camera apps Addons port – Creative Effects, AR Effect 2.0.4 , Background Defocus 1.1.7 on various rooted Xperia smartphones. TimeShift Video and 4K Camera app port is not yet available for the time being.

We shared a lot before Xperia Z2 Movies 6.1.A.0.4 and Walkman 8.1.A.0.4 app but it didn’t work on any devices and now XDA dev niaboc79 has made possible installation of Xperia Z2 Movies 6.1.A.0.4 and Walkman 8.1.A.0.4 app on any rooted Xperia Smartphone.

You need android 4.3 jelly bean to install them. It may work on lower version but not tested yet and may have an issue with resolution. It should worked perfect on Xperia Z1, Z, ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, SP, L, M, C.

Download below mentioned zip file,  it has old Album version also; no need to install it. Either flash the whole zip in recovery of extract it and push each apk manually in System/App, set permissions rw-r-r and reboot.

Xperia Z2 has been announced officially and just a few days after its launch we saw Xperia Z2 System Dump from 17.1.A.0.289 firmware Android 4.4.2 KitKat getting leaked and at the very same moment developers started porting apps from Xperia Z2 System Dump to other Xperia smartphones. We have already seen Xperia Z2 Smart call handling feature getting ported on Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and for some users it worked on other handsets like Xperia SP and Xperia Z also.

Just now XDA dev xperiaz2 has made Xperia Z2 Social Camera apps Addons port for many Xperia smartphones. It includes apps viz. Creative Effects, AR Effect 2.0.4 , Background Defocus 1.1.7. Some works on rooted handsets and some work on non rooted handsets so you need to have CWM to install below port. If ROM is deodexed it would be great.

To install given below mentioned apps, you must have Xperia Social Camera app on your device. It can be installed on devices like Xperia Z, Z1, Z Ultra,V,TX, SP, M, L, ZR etc.

XDA Dev RyokoN has ported Xperia Z2 Smart call handling feature on Xperia Z1 and it works fine. Your Xperia Z1 needs to have root in order to install this port.

Xperia Z2 Smart call handling features lets users answer the calls without touching the screen, to answer the calls bring the phone near to ear, to reject the calls just shake the device and silent the phone by just placing it face-down. Install Xperia Z2 battery icon SystemUI Mod on Xperia SP

As you all know Sony has used a new horizontal all white battery icon in Xperia Z2 KitKat firmware which has got mixed response from the users; now can be installed on Xperia SP. XDA Dev Levered has modded the SystemUI.apk for Xperia SP so that Xperia Z2 battery icon can be installed on Xperia SP. It is a mod from Xperia Z2 original KitKat SystemUI and only to be installed on Xperia SP.

To install it on your Xperia SP, it must be rooted, just download the below mentioned file and push it in system/media/app folder and replace it with the available file. Set correct permissions rw-r-r and do reboot. Kindly make a backup of original file before replacing it with the modded one.

We are trying to get our hands on other files so that developers can start building apps for other devices also. Xperia Z2 4K Camera app apk ( if it is present ) and Creative Effect Camera apk we will soon post with odex files. We can’t post Xperia Z2 system/framework folder neither any .jar files for the time being.

In our previous post we mentioned that Xperia SP Android 4.3 12.1.A.0.256 firmware screenshots and Xperia T LT30p Android 4.3 9.2.A.0.278 firmware screenshots have been leaked and guess what now both Xperia SP and Xperia T features the same UI, same Sony smart camera app and new Xperia themes what other members of Xperia Z family are enjoying.

Well leaks comes from XDA legendary developer “DooMLoRD” who first mentioned that system dump for the above firmware may not be available but guess what now it is available and you can download on your Xperia SP and Xperia T and enjoy the flavor of Android 4.3 before Sony releases it officially. As per DooMLoRD, these are internal testing firmwares for brown ( developer ) devices and now he has managed to get them boot onto red ) production devices.

How to Install White Balance App on Xperia Z1 to remove Yellow Hue

Android 4.3 14.2.A.0.290 firmware update has landed on Xperia Z1 finally yesterday which fixed the camera breaking bootloader issue and brought new Xperia themes and smooth UI. Is it a hardware issue or software issue, debate still continues while one stock Sony app “White Balance” can get rid of it which was seen in Xperia Z first. It is strange that Sony has neglected keeping this app on Xperia Z1, don’t know why. Well till now no one came up with any port of installing white balance app on Xperia Z1 but now it has come finally 🙂

XDA dev “RyokoN” has ported white balance app from NTT DoCoMo Xperia Z1 (SO-01F) on Xperia Z1.

  • You need Rooted and Recovery installed on Xperia Z1. ( It don’t work on non-rooted phones )
  • Download Z1_White_Balance.zip
  • Flash above zip file in recovery.

How to Install White Balance App on Xperia Z1 to remove Yellow Hue (2)

It’s done now 🙂 Now adjust the white balance settings according to your level of yellow hue on Xperia Z1 screen.

A good news came, Sony Xperia support staff member Rickard says that “White Balance settings in Xperia Z1 is planned for an update due in January 2014“. When we asked him which update he is referring to Android 4.3 or Android 4.4 ? He refused to answer on this issue.

Sony releases Android 4.4.1 AOSAP binaries for Xperia L,S,Z,ZL,Tablet Z

Officially it might take very long to get android 4.4 KitKat update on already mentioned Xperia devices from Sony but Xperia devices have recently got love from many developers. XDA devs have contributed for almost every Xperia device to get unofficially CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat build on them even the 2011 Xperia devices have got it.

In past Sony has released AOSP binaries for Xperia Z, ZL and Tablet Z and now Xperia L and Xperia S have been added to the list. Yes Sony has officially released  Android 4.4 AOSAP binaries for Xperia L, S , Z, ZL, Tablet Z. Build available is KRT16O.S3.1044 ( android 4.4 KitKat ).

How to use “adb sideload” method to manually update Nexus device without rooting or using custom recovery ?

Android 4.4 KitKat came and then its bug fixing android 4.4.1 KOT49E update came for Google Nexus 4, 5 and on Nexus 7 2013 ( Wi-Fi, LTE model ), Nexus 10 tablet. It was in actual rolled to update some major issues on Google Nexus 5 especially it’s camera app and in process of that Google also rolled for above mentioned devices.

Well there may be a case that you don’t receive any OTA update notification for an update ( even it is released for a long time ) in that case you need to manually flash the update package file on your respective device which Google release normally after an update everytime. Today we will tell you how to use “adb sideload” method to manually update Nexus device without rooting or using custom recovery ?

How to use “adb sideload” method to manually update Nexus device ?

It is “STANDARD” guide, which can be used on any Nexus device like Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus10 to update it manually.

We are considering that you are on stock android ROM and have unlocked/locked bootloader.

NOTE :- No need of Rooting or custom recovery in this process. In recovery “volume buttons” are used to navigate and “power button” to select.

  • You must have the latest version of “adb“. Download it from given below link and then extract on your PC.

Download Platform-Tools.zip | 1.10 Mb

  • Download the respective OTA package of your device ( ex like OTA.zip ). Rename the file as “update.zip“. Place it in same folder “Platform-Tools” as where “adb” is placed.
  • Enable USB Debugging on your device, to do that go to settings >developer options > enable USB Debugging. After enabling it, connect your device to PC.
  • Now navigate back to same folder “Platform-Tools” and in above folder directory path type “cmd” and press enter option.

  • Command Prompt box should open now, Is it ? If yes, proceed below…

  • Type “adb devices”. You will see your device listed on the command prompt screen as shown below.
  • Type the command “adb reboot recovery“.

  • Your respective nexus device will now reboot in recovery. Device reboots, see Google white logo ? Yes, good.
  • As device reboots in recovery you will notice an android laying down with a black exclamation mark inside red logo and “No command” written below it, exactly at that moment “press power and volume up button together” and release them. Now you are in stock recovery of your device. List of four menus will be displayed.

  • Menu Appears ? Yes, then select “apply update from adb” by using volume down button and press power button to select it.
  • Now in your PC’s command prompt box, type command “adb sideload update.zip“. This will load the file and updating process begins.
  • As soon as update finishes reboot the device.

Note :- To avoid the error of “adb sideload device not found”. As when connected your device to PC after enabling USB debugging, Navigate to “Platform-Tools” folder and open command prompt and type command “adb devices“, if your device is successfully connected you will get a result like your <device serial number> device.

What if installation fails ?

If installation of update.zip file fails in sideload  method then don’t panic, just press power button for a while until device turns off and then press again to reboot it normal mode.

Xperia S Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat from HoloUI Team

As when many Xperia devices all from 2011 to 2013 lineup are getting unofficial CyanogenMod 11 android 4.4 KitKat builds from many Xperia developers, Xperia S users were asking when a ROM will come for their devices. Here it comes, HoloUI team has created an Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat for Xperia S exclusively though in alpha stage working smooth.

Previously we have seen Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat build coming for Xperia 2011 Devices from LegacyXperia Project and for Xperia Z1, Z,  ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, T, V, Go, P, Sola, U, SP, Tablet Z; many builds from which coming from FreeXperiaTeam. Now almost every Xperia device have got Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 Android 4.4 KitKat build except for Xperia Ion.

As per HoloUI team, ROM is still in alpha stage, if you want to try it you can. Installing such ROMs require you to unlock the bootloader of phone. Keep in mind to have  a backup of the DRM keys before unlocking the bootloader for safety.

Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 for Xperia 2011 Devices from LegacyXperia Project

Future of Android 4.4 KitKat firmware update on Xperia 2011 devices is totally dark officially and even on 2012 Xperia devices, it is in shadow so far. In the meantime developer community has been a lot friendly as recently we saw unofficial CyanogenMod 11 coming up for various  devices viz. Xperia Z1, Z,  ZL, ZR, Z Ultra, T, V, Go, P, Sola, U, SP, Tablet Z; many builds from which coming from FreeXperiaTeam.

For Xperia 2011 devices viz. Xperia Arc/Arc S, Neo, Neo V, Pro, Mini Pro, Active, Mini, Ray, Live with Walkman; LegacyXperia Project Team has come up with unofficial CyanogenMod 11 now. As tested by many users, ROMs are pretty much stable only a few things are not working.
