What Sony has to say on Samsung making Galaxy S5 Water-Dust Resistant ?

Sony launched its flagship device Xperia Z2 for first half of year 2014, successor of Xperia Z1 and Samsung launched its new flagship device Galaxy S5 at MWC 2014 which interestingly has IP 67 certification for dust and water resistant. Well starting from Xperia Z, Sony has implemented the water and dust resistant certification in many devices and now it has become a signature feature of Sony’s flagship smartphones and tablets. Well on the other hand Samsung has made its flagship device dust and water resistant for the first time.

CNET asked a couple of questions to Sony Executives in US on what Sony has to say on Samsung making Galaxy S5 Water-Dust Resistant. Let’s check out the conversation…

“We started the waterproof trend”, “We’re not worried about it.” Ravi Nookala, head of Sony’s US mobile division told to CNET.

At Sony Mobile press conference MWC 2014, Kazuo Hirai, CEO Sony Corp. said he believes in “One Sony” and now it is the most important factor for Sony Corp.

As users are getting aware of water and dust resistant phones, it will eventually benefit Sony and Xperia Z line; said Nookala and Calum MacDougall, director of product marketing for the Xperia franchise.

“It starts a dialogue for waterproof and helps us tell our story,” MacDougall quoted.

Marking the Xperia Z1S water resistant feature they mentioned at present there are 700 T-Mobile Stores in US where Sony workers demonstrates users that how Xperia Z1S can survive under water ( by putting it in a water tank ) also and can shoot photos and videos easily. Ravi Nookala mentioned that users will ask the same question about Galaxy S5’s water resistant nature.

An interesting statement was quoted by MacDuugall on Sony Mobile launching mid range Xperia M2, that they don’t want to go cheap and damage the brand.

“Our focus is to secure value, not volume,” MacDougall said.

Well whatever is the case, users have to decide in the end which brand to choose and which device as companies can do any type of marketing regarding their devices but customer is king always.

Xperia SP 12.1.A.1.192 firmware certified – Bug Fixing Update

Sony rolled android 4.3 12.1.A.0.266 firmware update on Xperia SP after so called delayed crisis and when they rolled Xperia SP user started complaining about so many bugs which this 12.1.A.0.266 firmware brought. Just now it seems a new bug fixing update in form of 12.1.A.1.192 firmware will soon be arriving on Xperia SP as it has just been certified on PTCRB.

12.1.A.1.192 firmware is certified for all variants of Xperia SP. Xperia SP users have complained regarding bugs like volume button not appearing bug, battery drain, lags in phone, high RAM usage etc. Check below the 12.1.A.1.192 firmware certification on PTCRB below.

Xperia T, Xperia V 9.2.A.1.199 firmware certified – Bug fixing update

Much awaited android 4.3 was rolled on Xperia T and Xperia V after so many days of delay and crisis; when it rolled officially, users started complaining about the handful of bugs they are facing. 9.2.A.0.295 firmware was rolled back on Xperia T, TX and V as android 4.3 update and just now a 9.2.A.1.199 firmware has been certified for Xperia T and Xperia V as bug fixing update on PTCRB.

Severe battery drain, more RAM usage issue are some bugs which users reported to us. 9.2.A.1.199 firmware will keep Xperia T and Xperia V on android 4.3 and is a bug fixing update only. After updating to android 4.3 Sony has started rolling other OTA updates also, like we saw recently Album 5.4.A.0.20 update.

Garmin Xperia Edition coming to Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet, M2, SmartWatch 2 – Sony Confirms

Sony has officially unveiled the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet and Xperia M2 at MWC 2014 where Xperia Z2 will rule as H1 flagship for year 2014. Before the MWC 2014 event there were rumors that Garmin Xperia Edition extension will come to Sony SmartWatch 2 but now Sony Mobile has officially confirmed in the blog post that Garmin Xperia Edition will come preloaded on all handsets launched at MWC 2014 exclusively which includes onboard maps, lane guidance, speed warnings, traffic, social media integration etc.

Garmin’s Technical Product Manager, Tudor Tiplea threw some light on Garmin Xperia Edition and its integration with Xperia handsets and Sony SmartWatch 2. Below lines are quoted by him…

“The extension for SmartWatch 2 will be available in Google Play, and it will let SmartWatch 2 receive navigation information, via Bluetooth, from the smartphone. Users will see a detailed map on their wrist, making it easy to navigate on foot. You will be able to see your current position, as well as your route, and there’s also a neat zoom function which lets you take a closer look at your map.”

“Garmin Xperia Edition features onboard maps stored locally on the smartphone, so you can navigate even in areas where cell phone coverage is spotty”.

Garmin Xperia Edition and the extension for SmartWatch 2 will be available in March 2014 across whole Europe and on Xperia Z1, Z2 Tablet and M2 when they are launched.

Sony launched three handsets at MWC 2014 and a couple of accessories associated with them. Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet and Xperia M2 are three devices launched at MWC 2014 from Sony, Xperia Z2 being the flagship device for first half ( H1 ) of 2014 from Sony.

Xperia Z2 Tablet is the successor to Xperia Tablet Z, indeed an awesome upgradation over the Xperia Tablet Z. Xperia M2 being a mid range device. Till now Sony has launched many devices this year and still many are rumored to be launched, we hope to see a good year for Sony Mobile ahead.

Xperia Z1 14.2.A.1.142 firmware rolled on Deutsche Telekom carrier

Recently 14.2.A.1.142 firmware was certified for Xperia Z1 C6903, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact on PTCRB from which 14.2.A.1.142 firmware rolled first on Xperia Z1 Compact ( carrier devices ) and then 14.2.A.1.146 firmware was spotted on Chinese Xperia Z1 Compact M51w which is yet not available for sale. Now 14.2.A.1.142 firmware is seen rolling on some carrier specific Xperia Z1 also. 14.2.A.1.144 firmware has already been certified for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra.

14.2.A.1.142 firmware ( Android 4.3 ) is confirmed on Xperia Z1 Deutsche Telekom carrier handset in Germany which is a minor bug fixing update only and was spotted for Xperia Z1 C6903. Some users are still experiencing touch screen unresponsive and sound enhancement force close issue still on this update.

We don’t expect this Xperia Z1 14.2.A.1.142 firmware to roll out globally on regular variants.

Xperia E1 20.0.A.1.8 firmware certified on PTCRB

A few days back we saw 20.0.B.0.68 firmware getting certified for Xperia E2 Dual D2104 on PTCRB which is android 4.3 which will come out of the box when it is launched officially in the market and just now 20.0.A.1.8 firmware has been certified for Xperia E1 D2004 and D2005 variants which is as expected will be android 4.3.

Xperia E1 features 4″ WVGA display with S200 SoC, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB internal storage, 3MP Rear cam and is basically a Walkman phone as Sony tagged it like that, during its official announcement earlier in Jan. Xperia E1 and Xperia E1 Dual are low end devices.

Check below the certification of 20.0.A.1.8 firmware for Xperia E1 D2004 and D2005 on PTCRB Page.

20.0.A.1.8 firmware certification clearly indicates that launch in on track and soon we will see Xperia E1 and Xperia E1 Dual in the market, hopefully globally.

Xperia Z2 hands on experience photos – Overview of KitKat UI

Something extraordinary from Sony has officially been unveiled at MWC 2014 in form of Xperia Z2, the successor which takes over the legacy of Xperia Z1. Sony also launched Xperia Z2 Tablet along with Xperia M2. Well no wonder Sony has only facelifted some features in Xperia Z1 as when compared to Xperia Z2.

Xperia Z2 features android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box, Snapdragon 801 Soc MSM8974AB 2.3 GHz quad core processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM in a 5.2″ FHD Triluminos and world’s first Live color LED display. Xperia Z2 features 20.7 MP Exmor RS rear cam capable of recording 4K videos ( 3840×2160 pixels/30p ) and 2.2 MP front cam.

Xperia Z Ultra C6833 14.2.A.1.144 firmware certified on PTCRB

A day ago we saw 14.2.A.1.144 firmware getting certification for Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z1 C6903 and here it comes for Xperia Z Ultra C6833 also. 14.2.A.1.144 firmware is not spotted for HSPA+ version of Xperia Z Ultra. 14.2.A.1.144 firmware seems a carrier specific update so far to us as previous build 14.2.A.1.142 firmware has not been rolled on Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra yet but was seen rolling for Xperia Z1 Compact D5503.

14.2.A.1.146 firmware was spotted on Xperia Z1 Compact M51w a few days ago. At present Xperia Z Ultra is on android 4.3 14.2.A.1.136 firmware and if 14.2.A.1.144 firmware ever came will bring only minor bug fixing updates to Z Ultra.

Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet 17.1.A.0.504 firmware Android 4.4.2 KitKat Certified

As we all know Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet have been announced by Sony at MWC and pre-orders for both have been started by Sony in Europe through their official online stores. As promised by Sony both Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet will be launched with Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box and here comes the first firmware certification for both devices on PTCRB page which clearly shows that Sony is ready with KitKat firmware now.

Android 4.4.2 KitKat 17.1.A.0.504 firmware have been certified on PTCRB for both devices following a change over first 17.1.A.0.391 firmware build certified a few days ago before the official announcement of both devices at MWC 2014. 17.1.A.0.504 firmware has been certified for both LTE and HSPA+ versions of handsets.

Sony has launched a new mid range device Xperia M2 at MWC 2014 along with flagships Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet. Xperia M2 features 4.8″ qHD Display, Snapdragon 400 SoC 1.2 GHz quad core processor ( MSM8926 / MSM8226 ) with Adreno 305 GPU. Xperia M2 weighs 148 grams and 8.6mm thick. We were expecting Xperia M2 to be priced somewhere between $350-$400 and here it comes.

Xperia M2 is available for pre-order in Germany at a base price of €279 / $343 / £230 from Amazon.de. Xperia M2 is not listed on Sony’s official online shopping stores in Europe yet, though it is priced a bit expensive but Sony has also priced Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet a bit expensive in starting for pre-orders. As per Sony we may see Xperia M2 launch in markets in April 2014.

Sony announced Stereo Microphone STM10 at MWC 2014 exclusively along with Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet. Stereo Microphone STM10 is a specific high sensitivity microphone for true audio quality while shooting videos, available only in white color. Stereo Microphone STM10 comes with a 90 Degree tilt action so that it can be moved in the direction where audio source is located.

Stereo Microphone STM10 can be used with any Xperia smartphone which has 3.5mm headphone jack connector. Inside the box there is 1 microphone set and wind screen. It is made up of aluminium frame and stainless steel mesh.

Sony has announced an interesting headset during MWC 2014 event i.e. Digital Noise Cancelling Headset MDR-NC31EM for Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet exclusively though can be paired with any smartphone featuring 3.5mm headphone jack. Sony has featured Digital Noise Cancelling technology in Xperia Z2 which reduced the ambient noises up to 98% when paired with above DNC MDR-NC31EM headset.

Digital Noise Cancelling Headset MDR-NC31EM will be available in white and black color and for the time being they are under coming soon tag so no specific info is there on price, we expect them to be priced at around £60. Hands-free calling is also enabled which will only work if it is connected to 3.5 mm 5 pole audio-contact. 13.5 mm dynamic speaker type is used in DNC Headset MDR-NC31EM.

Sony has announced a special protective cover for Xperia Z2 i.e. Style Cover Stand SCR10. Style Cover Stand SCR10 is a ultra thin flip cover style case exclusively made for Xperia Z2, will be available in white and black color. It is a special notebook style case which can be used as a desk stand for perfect viewing.

Sony has also launched a separate Style Cover Stand SCR12 for Xperia Z2 Tablet. Style Cover Stand SCR10 is under coming soon tag on Sony’s online store and no info on the price of Style Cover Stand SCR10 is available for the time being.
