Nexus 5 the latest flagship device from Google, well no doubt it is undoubtedly the best device running stock android ROM till now but many users are complaining now their Nexus 5 screen has cracked after falling from a low height on a hard surface. Nexus 5 features 4.95″ screen Corning Gorilla Glass 3 but is it tough enough to resist daily falls and avoid cracks.

Well a user claims his Google Nexus 5 fell from his coat pocket on a hard surface and his Nexus 5 screen cracked from top side. On side bumpers not much cracks or marks were spotted but on screen it has got a lot cracks. Check below images.

Hi. Have you heard of an LG Nexus 5 screen impact causing a hairline crack within the LCD which eventually causes fluid to bleed out leaving a dark spot on the screen? It looks like water damage but with no pathway from a speaker or button. It’s simply a dark splotch in the middle of the phone. (Contact me for photos)
    Thanks…Greg

We have more than 300 users impacted by screen being cracked on a very small fall (mine fell from less tha a feet) . This is totally frustrating when you claim it to be gorilla glass?? I have used almost many phones till now and none was so delicate to use. I request you to recall the phones and replace them earliest before this issue widens and detroys Google’s image . If the issue is not being taken care at earliest, I will have to go into legal terms afterall you charged hefty Rs.33000 for this phone !! .Refer : http://www.change.org/en-IN/petitions/google-lg-recall-nexus-5-phones-the-screen-shatters-on-minor-impact#share

My Google Nexus 5 screen got cracked from putting in my jeans back pocket along with a key. The key might have pressed on the screen and made it crack. I could not believe my eyes when I saw cracks on the screen, as I was not aware of the cracking until I took a look at the screen. I used HTC evo 3d for 2 years…without any protection and often times keeping it along with my keys. There was never a problem.

My nexus 5 screen cracked from the bottom left corner after it slipped from my hand on the road. In two days the cracks spread across the entire screen. Although the phone still functions but it is frustrating to see that the screen has got damaged on a minor fall. I have been using Samsung galaxy for a long and this phone has fallen many times but screen has never been damaged. Sorry to say LG and Google has provided a poor infrastructure to such an amazing phone that I could not handle minor wear and tear. I won’t recommend this phone to anyone else.

the same thing has happened. Gorilla Glass 3 has cracked like a simple mirror. Now i want to know how to take care of the problem. should i go for service centre where its more than 8k. there are few sellers in ebay or else where there are able to provide the screen for 2.5k or 3k. if the display and digitizer is not broken , the screen will be ok,right. is it safe.. would there be any problem with the touch or HD .

Google/LG really need to consider build quality on nexus 5. My 32gb nexus 5 screen shattered yesterday while taking a snap slipped from my hand at ground level onto flat sand which would be around 15cms/.5ft. The screen looks like someone threw it on a wall. Very poor gorilla glass quality.

I didn’t even drop my phone. Put in pocket, drove a few blocks to meet friends. Took it out and put it on table. Friend goes what happened to your phone. Looked done and screen is shattered and phone does not work.

On recent closerinspection I note a small crack on the side just under one of the buttons.

My contention, stress fracture due to poor build quality.

    purchased from google play store.

Can’t afford to be without a phone. Can’t afford to fix a phone that is highly likely to do the same thing.

Mine too fell off my lap and cracked :`(. Dunno if I should bother to get it repaired or get a new phone (not a Google Nexus for sure) specially becoz there is no guarantee “Gorilla Glass” wont do a repeat performance and crack again due to you a minor impact.

Need advise – how many of you got the damn screen repaired and what was the damage. My phone is otherwise fully functional except for a cracked screen.

Same here, just a month old phone, screen cracked with very minor drop, Rs7250 is the replacement cost, you need to place order and wait for the screen, 3 days wait time. Feeling really bad for spending so much and Iam worried about future drops, the screen is not tough. thinking if i should spend on changing the screen, or just get other phones which has same feature but costs only as much as the screen 🙁
LG spares and Service centers are making good money, good mode of additional income.
I had blackberry different models for 7 years, multiple falls, not even a single damage, even in function.

      Hello Capt,

You can mail Google through play.google.com. You just need your os version and the IMEI number.

go to play.google.com, click on devices, click on nexus 5, scroll down and click on customer support/care (don’t remember what its called). Once there, on the top right hand side of the screen you will see a contact us link from there you just need to select the appropriate options.

I think it might be for devices bought via the play store but it wont hurt to try your luck…

This seems to a problem with LG phone. My G2 Pro fell down from abt 2 and 1/2 feet and has developed cracks. Been using handsets for 15 years and this is the first time when phone has racked like it did. After all this was my first LG phone and probably the last. The repair cost ..a cool 9k+. Why can’t they replace for free if the build quality is so bad. They ought to recall these poor devices.

  63. Joel Mountain October 1, 2014 at 7:37 pm - Reply

My phone has had the screen replaced twice due to stress cracks. The screen cracks across the center from the volume button to the card slot. Never dropped my phone – NEVER. But have to replace the screen anyway.

I have had my phone for a couple months. If the screen cracks again I am going to throw the phone in the garbage and get a real phone. I have had blackberrys, HTC, Apple, and a cheap BLU phone from Amazon. All have had no problems at all.

    Google Nexus 5 – 3 months, 2 screen replacements, 0 drops.

What is Google/LG going to do about their faulty phones?

  64. Siddharth October 1, 2014 at 10:18 pm - Reply

@Joel In all likelihood… nothing. It’s best to avoid google and lg products. I too faced a similar situation only problem was that my phone had fallen but the response I got from google and lg was a, as expected, “we can’t do anything”. I even went on a massive communication spree with both google and lg, trying to make them see sense and showing them that the manufacturer of the glass themselves say that it’s damage resistant but no dice.

That’s why my advice would be to avoid products from either of these companies.

  65. Joel Mountain October 2, 2014 at 11:33 pm - Reply

Siddharth – thanks. Yes, I will never buy one of their products again. I found a local place that replaces the screen for $100. But it appears they screen gets a stress crack every 6 weeks or so. So $100 every couple months gets real expensive.

Bought 2 Nexus 5’s from Google Play the day they were released. Love the phones but the touch screen on one stopped working after 9 mos. Bought another phone to use and before I can send it off to be looked at, the other phone’s speaker stops working. Can’t hear phone ringing, notifications, music but can hear everything when headphones plugged in. Call LG and Factory Resets got both phones working again. Unfortunately speaker problem returns immediately. Less than 2 weeks later the screen on the 1st phone with the touch screen problem suddenly develops stress fractures without any falls or drops. Phone has been protected back and front in a checkbook style case and well taken care of. No negligent reason this should’ve cracked, maybe this is why the touch screen stopped working originally. Less than one year later, $700.00 worth of phones are broken…and here I thought we were getting a great deal!

@shaji. I got my Nexus 5 fixed a week back. You can take it to the LG service center and they will change out the entire display. It cost me Rs 7130 to get it fixed.

My phone fell from my hand. The screen broke. It appears that someone has hit my phone with a hammmer. Really bad product from Google and LG. When so many people are complaining about the screen product. LG and Google should have recalled the product and should have replaced it. I now need to switch to another vendor.

    Same case 🙁
    So what do you think?
shall we wait till Google provides free replacement for India customers or Go to LG Service center and change it?
As till the time there is no update from them or on this post.

    Same.
Dropped my phone at 2 ft height and cracked the screen.
    Waste marketing about unbreakable screens.

My experience with nexus 5 is worst of all
I bought it from ebay(my biggest mistake, such a shit load site)
My lcd screen broke suddenly without any fall, just like another guy mentioned hair line break and screen started to bleed.
Next i went Lg service center, they told me that this phone has a few fake components
Now i am stuck with a fake phone .
    Aaaaghhh Fuck you ebay

My nexus just broke today. Its working properly but there are hairline cracks here and there starting from upper right part. Though, pretty less than those which are shown in the pics. I wanted to know if how am I supposed to repair and all? How much will I have to pay?

My Nexus 5 fell from 1.5 feet and its cracked like it fell from 6th floor of a building.
Let’s all register a complaint regarding the same in consumer court and this device needs to be recalled in INDIA as well.
    So what do you think?
shall we wait till Google provides free replacement for India customers or Go to LG Service center and change it?
